2024 On the Canals Program at Hudson Crossing Park

Hudson Crossing Park is thrilled to once again offer free programs on the Champlain Canal thanks to the New York State Canal Corporation’s On the Canals Program. These excursions offer participants the opportunity to experience just some of the adventures that await them along the New York Canal System at absolutely no cost.

HIKES & HISTORY CRUISES

Take a boat ride through Champlain Canal Lock C5 in an authentic stern wheel paddle boat and then take a hike through Hudson Crossing Park!

This excursion has the best of both worlds, with guides sharing tales of local history on water and the area’s unique ecology on land.

The on land portion is slightly more than 3/4 mile, mostly flat, and along a trail of mowed grass. Participants will be split into two groups of 6, one group starting with the hike and one on the boat, then meeting at Hudson Crossing Park’s “Eagle Point” to switch places.

This excursion is best enjoyed by ages 12 and up. All participants must be able to take the hike portion of the excursion. Group size limited to 12 per excursion.

*Please note that in an attempt to ensure all spaces are filled and cancellations are kept to a minimum, tickets for these excursions will be released on the first day of each month through the Mohawk Maiden Cruises ticketing platform.

FULL MOON OWL PROWLS

Held on the full moon of every month June – October, this guided program gives participants of all ages the chance to explore the park after dark. A prime birding location, we will keep an eye to the skies and listen for the distinctive calls of some of HCP’s resident owls, such as the Great Horned, Screech, and Barred Owls under the light of the full moon.

Visitors will also learn about how full moons were named (June: Strawberry, July: Buck, August: Sturgeon, etc) and see what other nocturnal park residents may make themselves known.

Group size limited to 20 per excursion.

RESILIENT GARDENING: GROWING NATIVE PLANTS & MANAGING INVASIVE SPECIES 101

Join Hudson Crossing Park’s Gardening experts in the park’s pollinator gardens, which hold more than 40 types of native plants! This hands-on workshop is held once a month, and program activities will be based on the needs of that time of year with topics ranging from planting and mulching, weeding and maintaining, and seed collecting for next season. You will also learn to recognize and how to safely remove some common invasive species, such as bittersweet, knotweed, and honeysuckle.

Group size is limited to 20 people per workshop. This program is best for ages 7 and up.
