Kids on the Canals – Event Details
Registration required for all participating children (ages 12 and below)
Attendees will meet at the Hudson Crossing Park pavilion (across from the parking lot)
Please bring:
Appropriate footwear and attire
A (full) refillable water bottle
Bug spray
Sun screen
Hudson Crossing Park is a carry in, carry out facility – please take all trash with you

Nature- May 22nd or September 17th, 10am
This nature-themed excursions will have kids hiking and exploring along Hudson Crossing Park’s trails, looking for signs of the park’s animal residents and their habitats. Participants will take an easy hike looking for signs of Northern Map Turtles, beaver, osprey, and more! They will learn about the behaviors and habitats of the animals who call the canal home before heading back to the pavilion to create a nature themed craft.
Approximately 2 hours long.
Best suited for ages 3-6 (but older kids are welcome!)
Group size is limited to 16, Children must be accompanied by an adult (not included in the group size)

Science Part 1- June 28th, 10am
This science-themed excursion will take the kids on a short hike to Lock C5 to learn firsthand how it works. They will explore the engineering principles behind the lock and learn how the lock enables boats to navigate changes in elevation. Back at the pavilion, the participants will split into family teams to design and build a functional lock model.
Approximately 2 hours long.

History- August 16th, 10am
The history-themed excursions invite kids to step back in time and explore the rich history of the Champlain Canal and Hudson River. Participants will start with a guided hike that explores the history of the river and canal, from the indigenous people all the way to modern-day voyaging through the canal. The hike will include a special tour of "Stratton's Shanty," a replica lock tender’s shanty, and share how the role of the lock tender has changed over the last 200 years. Back at the pavilion, participants will enjoy a special craft to connect the past with the future.

Science Part 2- July 26th, 10am
This science-themed excursion will focus on how boats are powered, starting with the mules that once pulled boats along the canal and ending with the modern engines we see today. Participants will take a short hike to look for different types of boat propulsion in action and explore the area where mules used to tow canal boats. Back at the pavilion, kids will design and build their own balloon-powered boats, experimenting with different designs to see which ones perform best.
